British Airways has announced that it will be introducing more aircraft and more routes from London City Airport for 2019.

The news comes after its busiest summer ever at the airport, with the airline anticipating to implement some of the changes as early as winter 2018.

The first change will be a new-year round service to Rome from the Docklands airport, and it will include BA’s one-way hand baggage-only fares from £55 each way.

It marks the 33rd destination that BA will be offering from London City, and is sure to be a hit with those looking for cheap flights to the Italian capital. Never been before? Check out our Rome city guide for finding the best attractions, restaurants and hotels.

It’s not the only addition to British Airways’ flight schedule; the company is also set to introduce a fifth daily service to Zurich, one of its popular routes, on week days.

The expansion will also offer up brand new aircraft to the BA CityFlyer fleet in 2019, bringing it to a total of 26 aircraft.

This in turn means nearly 20 per cent more seats on offer, allowing the airline to launch new destinations.

Tom Stoddart, managing director BA CityFlyer, said: “It is an exciting time for us at London City Airport. The four new aircraft shows our commitment to giving our customers an even bigger range of destinations and flight times.

“This growth will see the number of job opportunities in East London increase with direct employment opportunities for pilots, cabin crew and engineers, as well as indirect roles for our various suppliers in and around the airport.”

The new routes are all part of British Airways’ £4.5billion investment planned over the next five years, which is set to include perks such as better Wi-Fi quality in every seat, new cabin interiors and a total of 72 new aircraft.
